Red Bike Press Release: Red Bike to Pause Service for Winter Months

System will re-open in Spring 2024

For Immediate Release December 19th, 2024

CINCINNATI, OH – December 19, 2023 – Red Bike, the Cincy region’s non-profit bike share service, will pause regular operations on January 12, 2024, with plans to reopen service in early Spring.

Red Bike stations will be shuttered, and bikes will be unavailable for rent. Red Bike will be making significant staff reductions at that time but will keep working in the shop and in the field to repair equipment and prepare for the Spring season. Like the pandemic pause of 2020, Red Bike will work with members to extend passes or refund purchases, on a case-by-case basis.

This is not where Red Bike imagined operations would be as the system enters the tenth year of service, especially after an exceptional 2023 – marked by a record-setting nearly 140,000 rides, 33% of which came from our income-qualified Red Bike Go program. However, like all public transportation options, system revenue alone cannot sustain our operations. Significant contributions from corporate and private sponsors as well as local and federal grants have enabled the Red Bike system to reach this point, and for that we extend our heartfelt gratitude.

Red Bike firmly believes that shared micro-mobility through a station-based, non-profit bike share program is a core and critical component of transportation in the Cincy region, and as such deserves stable and continued public investment and support. The Red Bike staff and board will work tirelessly with partners and stakeholders to establish that support.

Understanding the importance of this service to the city, Red Bike is committed to finding solutions that work for everyone.

Thank you for being an essential part of the Red Bike journey. Let us continue to pedal towards a brighter and more sustainable future together.
